Tigers slide past Alton 4-3

The Telegraph

EAST ALTON — Tuesday night’s Mississippi Valley Club Hockey Association game between old rivals Edwardsville and Alton may have been missing a little of the sparkle from years gone by. But what it lacked in hype it made up in excitement.

Edwardsville outlasted the Redbirds 4-3 in the early season matchup at the east Alton Ice Arena.

The loss dropped Alton to 0-2 while Edwardsville evened its mark at 1-1.

Since Edwardsville moved its varsity team to the Mid-State Hockey Association in St. Louis last season, the EHS spot in the MVCHA varsity division has been assumed by what is essentially the Tigers’ junior varsity. But EHS coach Jason Walker, who coaches the Mid-States and MVCHA teams, said there’s still plenty of talent in the MVCHa.

“Alton is a good team,” Walker said. “And that;s what we want. The goal for this team is to learn and to keep improving. And so far, I think that’s happening. Tonight’s game was a far cry for us from (Monday’s) game (a loss to Granite City).”

The Redbirds, who lost to Bethalto in their season opener Monday, were shorthanded because of illness.

“Our hands were a little tied tonight with six players out sick,” Alton coach Aaron Kestler said. “but we’re proud of the way they battled through it.

“We played a physical game, knowing that Edwardsville is a tough team and a big rival.”

While some of that luster rivalry luster was missing, the coaches remember it.

“We were talking about what fun games those were for both teams,” Walker said. “This was a good game, too, though.”

Edwards led 1-0 after the first period, but the Redbirds rallied to tie it twice in the second period, before the Tigers won it going away in the third.

Edwardsville outshot Alton 28-14.

Edwardsville’s Logan Corzine scored 57 into the game, assisted by Nate Frey and Justin Harper.

Then 38 seconds into the second period, it was Alton’s Connor Neely, assisted by Anderson Carter, who tied it 1-1.

Corzine gave the Tigers a 2-1 lead at 6:14 of the second from an assists by Tyler Jansen, but Neely scored from a Jacob Hendrickson assist less than a minute later to make it 2-2 heading into the third period.

Corzine scored his third straight goal unassisted at 10:38 of the third and Adam Leston made it 4-2 at 9:51, assisted by Ethan Bogner.

Tristan Mouser scored unassisted for Alton with 56 seconds remaining in the game.

“We had two good goals from Connor Neely,” Kestler said. “And (goalkeeper) Madi Dallas did an outstanding job which kept us in the game.

“We battled right to the end. A few of (Edwardsville’s) goals were due to us not getting the puck out of our zone.

“We’re hoping to have a healthier team (Wednesday) night against Wood River.”

Alton and East Alton-Wood river will square off at 8:45 p.m. Wednesday at East Alton.
