BOYS PREP BOWLING: Milliman leads Alton to regional title; Jersey, Roxana teams also advance

JERSEYVILLE — It was a big day for Telegraph-area bowlers at the Jersey Boys Bowling Regional Tournament. But while three of the four team sectional-qualifying spots went to local schools, two more finished just out of the running.

Led by individual champion Justin Milliman, Alton High repeated as the regional team champ, getting past host Jersey in the battle for the top spot, 5,891-5,819. Abingdon was third at 5,727 and Roxana nabbed the final team berth at next Saturday’s Mount Vernon Sectional Tournament. The Shells got past fifth-place Marquette Catholic 5,551-5,450.

Marquette slipped past Civic Memorial by eight pins for the fifth spot.

Taylorville finished seventh with 5,385 pins, followed by Southwestern with 5,231, West Central 5,192, Hoopeston 5,155 and East Alton-Wood river 4,767.

Milliman, who also posted the high game for the day with a 259, won the individual championship with 1,305 pins. He beat runner-up Nate Simpson of Abingdon by 34 pins. Jersey’s Zane Longley was third with 1,260 pins and Tyler Jones of North Mac, competing as an individual, was fourth with 1,230.

Southwestern’s Connor Schobernd was sixth with 1,216, Roxana’s Christian Bertoletti was seventh with 1,196, while Marquette’s Luke Simmons finished eighth with 1,188 pins.

Alton, Jersey and Roxana’s teams will advance to the sectional tournament, while the top 10 individuals from non-qualifying teams will also advance.

Miller of North Mac led the individual qualifiers, followed by Conner Jones of Chatham Glenwood with 1,219 pins, Southwestern’s Schobernd, Marquette’s Simmons, Benjamin Mailloux of Normal Community with 1,168, Liberty’s Zachary Lantz 1,159, CM’s Zac Cathorall 1,153, Brock Swisher of Taylorville 1,149, Chet Stock of Hoopeston 1,138 and Sam Cogan of Marquette 1,129.

Following Milliman, Alton’s scores included Trevor Vallow 1,155, Derek Henderson 1,071, Gavin Taylor 1,003, Matt Engdale 960, with Chris Duke’s one-game 204 and Jared Cochran’s one-game 193 rounding out the Redbirds totals.

Alton had game scores of 1,065, 1,025, 942, 1,074, 881 and 904 in securing the team championship. Jersey posted game scores of 981, 1,003, 985, 1,073, 880 and 897.

Jersey’s five scorers were led by Longley’s 1,260, followed by Mike Russell with 1,1161 pins, Greg Towell 1,149, Dustin Davidson 1,126 and Warren Woolsey 1,123.

The Shells’ Bertoletti, who advanced to the sectional last year as an individual, set his team’s p[ace Saturday with his 1,196. Ethan Baumgartner bowled a 1,113, followed by Blake Adams 1,106, Marcus Hartnett 1,097 and Logan Wonders 1,039.
