MASCOUTAH — The Mahomet-Seymour Bulldogs repelled Southwestern Conference contenders to claim the championship of the 48th annual Mascoutah Invitational wrestling tournament.
The Bulldogs had one champion and scored 200.5 points to head a top four that included Collinsville (193.5), Alton (164.5) and defending tourney champion O’Fallon (152) in a 30-team field at the two-day event.
The SWC put five teams in the top seven with East St. Louis (130) and Belleville East (126.5) falling in behind fifth-place Quincy (138.5). SWC powers Edwardsville, Granite City and Belleville West were not part of the field.
The Alton Redbirds, runners-up in the tourney last season, put eight wrestlers on the medals podium with a top-eight finish. Garrett Sims was the lone Redbird in a championship bout. He finished second at 126 pounds with a 10-2 record.
Courteney Wilson (11-2) was third at 152, with Nolan Woszczynski (12-2) third at 182 and Kyle Hughes (11-2) third at 285 for the Redbirds, who got sixth-place finishes from Bryant Minton (5-8) at 106, Gus Kodros (8-5) at 120 and Pierre Evans (8-5) at 145, with Damien Jones (8-3) getting eighth at 132.
Civic Memorial scored 116.5 points to place ninth in the team standings. Freshman Caleb Tyus remained unbeaten at 17-0 with a championship at 113 pounds. Caine Tyus (16-2) was third at 106, Dillon Dublo (12-5) was fourth at 138, Peyton Bechtold (19-4) was fifth at 145, and Vinny Cafazza (11-8) was eighth at 170.
East Alton-Wood River produced three medalists while scoring 81.5 points to finish 17th. Jake Erslon (16-2) placed third at 170 to lead the Oilers, who had Zach Kincade (14-4) take fourth at 220 and Hunter Morales (10-6) in seventh at 160.
Jersey’s Ross Speidel (9-5) was sixth at 220 and Zeke Waltz (9-4) was eighth at 160. The Panthers were 22nd with 53.5 points.
Roxana was 24th with 42 points. The Shells’ Alex Maguire (11-4) placed third at 145 pounds.
